GTD Rankings

Listed below are the 2019 GTD rankings for each school. Each school is given a Performance Score and a Strength of Schedule Score. The Performance Score reflects the school's production, while the Strength of Schedule Score includes the performances of all their opponents. The GTD score is derived from the previous two metrics.

The rankings consider game locations, point differentials, and each school's opponents. It's more difficult to win in an away game, so those wins are worth more. On the other hand, a home loss carries the most penalty. Neutral court games are, well, neutral. The point differential also matters and can overrule the location effects. For example, a home win by 25 can mean more than an away win by 3. Likewise, a loss on the road by 20 could be more important than a home loss by 2.

Finally, team competition is taken into account. We should expect that some teams will put up inflated numbers because they might be an above average team in a below average conference. Nevada and Houston are good examples for this current season. Both Nevada and Houston have a Performance Score ranking in the top 10, but due to their weaker conferences, their scores are a bit inflated, as reflected by the low Strength of Schedule Score. To end with some optimism for these two teams, a high Performance Score and a low Strength of Schedule score can make them perfect candidates for a late tournament upset - we know they have the talent, we just haven't seen them use it consistently against worthy opponents.
